My Trip to Tokyo, Japan Part 1 of 2

Posted on May 22, 2018 at 8:25 AM

This is part one of my two-part series on my ten-day trip to Tokyo.

As I boarded my Japan Airlines flight, I was filled with excitement. I have wanted to go to Japan since I was old enough to watch Japanese Animation and fell in love with it. Even though it was an eleven-hour flight nothing could damper my excitement as my dream was finally coming true. I booked a flight that was overnight and would land in Japan during the afternoon hours. I slept on the plane to help me better adjust to the time difference more quickly. I would recommend this for anyone travelling to Japan. When my plane landed in Narita International airport, I was so ready for the fun to begin!

I grabbed my luggage and took a limousine bus to a hotel about a mile from my own. I figured with my printed directions I would be able to walk to my hotel and save some money. Boy was I wrong, I got lost in 2.5 seconds and ended up waving down a taxi to get to my hotel.

I decided to stay in Roppongi which is known as the foreigner area of Tokyo. I dropped off my luggage and decided to do some exploring. There are all types of restaurants that represent many different countries including Turkish, Spanish and Indian. I also chose this hotel because it was near a train station. The easiest way to get around Tokyo is by train.

The next day I took the train to the Tokyo Government Building for my scheduled walking tour, Exploring the Streets of Harajuku and its Shrine. My guides were very knowledgeable of the area and its history. I am a lover of architecture and Japan has some of the best I have seen so far. The shrine was large and rich with history.

My next stop was Takeshita Street which is a famous street in Tokyo for shopping and youth culture. There were stores that sold everything a teenager/young adult could want or need. I bought a Hello Kitty leopard print purse that I love to this day. I found a Jamaican restaurant nearby and had an awesome meal.

I ended the night at a Reggae night club called Club Matrix near my hotel where the music reminded me of home. The crowd was a mix of locals and tourists. I was surprised how popular Reggae and the Jamaican culture was.

The first two days of my Japan trip were amazing and exhausting as I was still adjusting to the time change. There people were very friendly and polite. I felt safe traveling by myself as a female. In Part 2 of my Japan trip, I will talk about Tokyo Disneyland, Yokohoma and other areas with Tokyo. There is so much to see and do, I would go back tomorrow if I could.
